The magic of a good night’s sleep

The magic of a good night’s sleep

Living mindfully means sleeping well.  The relationship between sleep and alcohol has been studied since the beginning of the 20th century.

Did you know, drinking alcohol before bed can add to the suppression of REM sleep during your first two sleep cycles?  Since alcohol is a sedative, sleep onset will often be shorter and some will even fall into a deep sleep rather quickly.  But, as the night progresses, an imbalance is created between slow-wave sleep and REM sleep, resulting in less of the latter and more of the former.  This decreases overall sleep quality which can affect our emotional, physical and mental health.

This season, we are inspired to make good choices.  Let’s make quality sleep a priority again.
